Composition
Pure Iron:
Consists primarily of iron (Fe) with minimal impurities.
It is a basic metal with a high degree of purity.
SAE 12L14 Steel:
A low-carbon, lead-free cutting steel with a specific chemical composition.
Key elements include carbon (C) ≤ 0.15%, manganese (Mn) 0.851.15%, sulfur (S) 0.260.35%, phosphorus (P) 0.040.09%, and lead (Pb) 0.150.35%.
Silicon (Si) content is very low, not exceeding 0.05%.
Properties
Pure Iron:
High ductility and malleability.
Good electrical and magnetic conductivity.
Relatively low tensile strength and hardness.
Vulnerable to rust and corrosion without proper treatment.
SAE 12L14 Steel:
Excellent machinability due to the presence of lead, which acts as a lubricant during cutting.
Good mechanical properties with tensile strength ranging from 390 MPa to 755 MPa (depending on heat treatment and size).
Elongation of at least 22% (hot-rolled) and 7.0% (cold-rolled).
Hardness can vary from 121 HB (hot-rolled) to 163 HB (cold-drawn), with cold-drawn hardness ranging from 152 HB to 217 HB.
Good plasticity and toughness, allowing for large deformations without cracking.
Resistant to wear and tear, making it suitable for applications requiring precision and durability.
Applications
Pure Iron:
Used in electrical and magnetic applications due to its high conductivity.
Used in the production of steel and other alloys.
Limited use in structural applications due to its low strength and susceptibility to corrosion.
SAE 12L14 Steel:
Widely used in machinery, energy, metallurgy, aerospace, and other industries.
Ideal for manufacturing precision instruments, watch parts, automotive components, machine tool accessories, hardware fittings, metal furniture, electrical products, and other parts that require high precision and surface finish.
Suitable for applications requiring good machinability, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality.
